Cabinet in Youngtown, AZ
Youngtown had 7,056 residents at the 2020 census. In 1954 two developers bought 320 acres of farmland here and built what's generally recognized as the first planned community in the United States dedicated to retirees, six years before Sun City opened next door. The first 125 houses went up in 1955. The town incorporated in 1960.
Then in 1996 it turned down a 16-year-old's residency, the state attorney general looked into it, the age ordinance turned out to be unenforceable, and Youngtown repealed the restriction in 1999. The demographics flipped hard. The 2020 median age is 37.2 and a quarter of residents are under 18.
US 60 runs along the north side and 111th Avenue forms the east border. Maricopa Lake sits inside the town. The housing is still overwhelmingly the original single-story stock from the mid-1950s and 1960s: small footprints, low ceilings, carports instead of garages, and kitchens sized for two people who ate at four.
Nothing about the original 1955 floor plans anticipated a family of five, and yet that's who lives in a fair number of them now, which is the whole story of this town in one sentence.
Youngtown is the one town out here where we ask who is going to use the kitchen before we design anything, because the answer genuinely varies. Same house, same 1957 layout, but a retired couple and a family with two teenagers want different things from it.
For the retired owner it's the familiar list: drawers instead of low shelves, pull-downs in the uppers, D-pulls, a knee space at the bath vanity. For the family it's capacity, and in a 1957 kitchen capacity means going up. Original uppers here stop at 30 inches with two feet of dead air above them.
We run cabinets to the ceiling, put the twice-a-year things in the top box, and pick up roughly 40 percent more storage without moving a wall. Either way the boxes usually stay. Plenty of these houses have original cabinets built on site out of solid fir, and fir that's been dry for seventy years is more stable than anything new.
New doors and hardware on those runs $4,600 to $9,800. Full replacement is $12,000 to $27,000.
Cabinet work we do in Youngtown, AZ
Tempe Elite Cabinets covers the same range of work in Youngtown that we do in Tempe — nothing is carved out because the address is a few miles up the road:
- Laundry Room Cabinets — Laundry room cabinets in Tempe almost always have to work around machines that are already sitting in a garage or crammed into a 30-inch closet off the hallway. The two upgrades that pay for themselves are a folding counter across the top of front loaders and shallow uppers you can actually reach into.
- Pantry Systems — Pantry cabinets and storage are the highest-return square footage in a Tempe kitchen, especially in the condo stock where the entire kitchen is eight to ten feet wide with no wall left to give. Converting a hall closet into a pantry holds more food than a 36-inch tall cabinet and usually costs less than half as much.
- Cabinet Refacing, Refinishing & Painting — Cabinet refacing and refinishing runs $4,000 to $10,000 in a typical Tempe kitchen against $15,000 to $40,000 to tear out and replace, and in this town it's the right call more often than it isn't. Tempe was built out decades ago, which means a lot of these kitchens sit on plywood boxes from an era when boxes were built properly and only the doors look their age.
- Cabinet Hardware & Organizers — Cabinet hardware and organizers are the cheapest thing in a Tempe kitchen that makes a real difference, at roughly $400 to $1,500 for the whole room. New hinges, new pulls and a couple of drawer inserts change how the kitchen feels every single day, and nothing gets demolished to do it.
- Soft-Close & Pull-Out Systems — Soft-close and pull-out shelves are the retrofit most Tempe kitchens should do before they do anything cosmetic, and a full kitchen of both usually lands between $1,200 and $3,500. You keep the cabinets you have and change the part you touch forty times a day.
- Countertops — Quartz and granite countertops in Tempe both land in roughly the same place on price, about $60 to $100 a square foot installed for the material most people actually pick. Quartz wins indoors here for one boring reason: it's nonporous, so it never needs sealing and it doesn't stain when a bottle of olive oil tips over behind the range.
